“Almost Run Away Calculator”
Contrived
The physics concept being demonstrated here is static
friction. Static friction is friction between two or more solid objects that are
not moving relative to each other. The static friction between the calculator
and the place mat is high enough that the calculator does not move at this
angle. Once it does start to move it transitions into kinetic friction between
two moving objects. This would occur if the angle increased just past what the
picture is demonstrating. Finally, the rubber on the back of the calculator
also plays a role in the calculator’s resistance to move.
